Concentrate Types
Every type of cannabis concentrate explained. What it is, how it's made, what it looks like, what it costs, and who it's for.
Live Rosin
What It Is
Live rosin is made from fresh-frozen cannabis that’s first turned into bubble hash (ice water extraction), then pressed with controlled heat and pressure. The “live” designation means the starting material was never dried or cured — it was flash-frozen immediately after harvest to preserve the full terpene profile of the living plant.
Why It Matters
Live rosin represents the cleanest, most flavorful concentrate available. Because no solvents are used at any stage, what you’re consuming is pure plant extract — just cannabinoids, terpenes, and other natural compounds. The flavor is unmatched. A quality live rosin tastes like the living plant smelled at harvest. Every terpene note comes through: the citrus, the pine, the gas, the fruit. This is the concentrate that cannabis purists obsess over, and for good reason.
Live Resin
What It Is
Live resin uses the same fresh-frozen starting material as live rosin, but the extraction is done with hydrocarbon solvents (usually butane or a butane-propane blend). The solvent strips cannabinoids and terpenes from the frozen flower, then gets purged off through vacuum processing. The result is a terp-rich concentrate with a wet, saucy consistency.
Why It Matters
Live resin sits in a sweet spot that makes it many people’s daily driver. You get most of the terpene preservation benefits of live rosin — because the starting material is fresh-frozen — at a more accessible price point. The flavor is excellent, the potency is consistently high, and the saucy texture is easy to work with. If you want great flavor without the premium price of solventless, live resin is where to look.
Wax
What It Is
Wax is a BHO extract that’s been agitated during the purging process to create an opaque, waxy consistency. The whipping introduces air and disrupts the molecular structure, turning what would otherwise be a clear oil into an opaque, easy-to-handle format. The starting material is typically cured flower rather than fresh-frozen.
Why It Matters
Wax is one of the most user-friendly concentrate textures. It’s firm enough to pick up with a dab tool without being difficult to break apart. Dosing is straightforward because you can see exactly how much you’re scooping. The flavor is decent — less complex than live products because terpenes degrade during the curing process, but still enjoyable. Wax is a reliable, affordable daily option for concentrate users.
Budder
What It Is
Budder (sometimes spelled “batter” or “badder”) is essentially wax that’s been whipped more aggressively during purging, creating a smoother, creamier consistency. Think of the difference between peanut butter and candle wax — same basic idea. Budder is softer and more pliable than wax.
Why It Matters
The creamy texture of budder makes it arguably the easiest concentrate to work with. It scoops cleanly off a dab tool, spreads easily for twaxing joints, and loads smoothly into dab pens. The taste is comparable to wax — solid but not as terp-forward as live products. Budder is popular with people who prioritize convenience and consistency in their concentrate experience. It’s also forgiving for beginners because it’s easy to handle small amounts.
Shatter
What It Is
Shatter is a BHO extract that’s been purged without agitation, resulting in a translucent, glass-like sheet. The molecular structure is stable and organized (think hard candy), which gives it that signature snap when you break off a piece. It’s the most visually consistent concentrate — you can see right through quality shatter.
Why It Matters
Shatter was the concentrate that started the dabbing revolution, and it remains popular for good reasons. Its stable structure means it has one of the longest shelf lives of any concentrate — it won’t butter up or change consistency as quickly as softer textures. The translucency is also a quality indicator: if you can see through it clearly, the extraction and purge were done well. The trade-off is lower terpene content compared to live products (terpenes interfere with the glass-like structure), so flavor is less complex. But the potency and clean hit are there.
Crumble
What It Is
Crumble is a BHO extract purged at lower temperatures over a longer period, producing a dry, crumbly texture that resembles a honeycomb or dry cheese. The extended purge evaporates more of the residual moisture and volatile terpenes, creating a drier product with a unique texture.
Why It Matters
Crumble is one of the most versatile concentrates because its dry texture makes it easy to break apart and sprinkle onto flower. It crumbles right on top of a bowl or along a joint with zero mess or tools needed. It’s also one of the most affordable concentrate options. The flavor is milder than wetter textures because more terpenes evaporate during the extended purge, but the potency is still solid. If you’re looking to boost your flower’s potency without a dab rig, crumble is the way to go.
Distillate
What It Is
Distillate is refined cannabis oil that’s been through molecular distillation — a process that strips away everything except the target cannabinoid (usually THC or CBD). The result is an extremely pure, potent oil that’s nearly flavorless and odorless. It’s the base for most vape cartridges and many commercial edibles.
Why It Matters
Distillate is pure efficiency. At 85-99% THC, it delivers maximum cannabinoid content per gram. It’s versatile — you can dab it, eat it, put it in a vape, or infuse it into virtually anything. The trade-off is that distillation removes the terpenes and other minor cannabinoids that create the entourage effect. What you get is a clean, potent, but somewhat one-dimensional high. Many manufacturers add terpenes back in (cannabis-derived or botanical), which helps with flavor but doesn’t fully replicate the natural plant profile.
Hash (Bubble Hash / Dry Sift)
What It Is
Hash is the oldest form of cannabis concentrate, dating back thousands of years. Modern hash comes in two main forms: bubble hash (made by agitating cannabis in ice water to separate trichome heads) and dry sift (made by sifting cannabis through fine mesh screens). Both methods collect the trichome glands — the tiny crystal-covered structures on the plant that contain most of the cannabinoids and terpenes.
Why It Matters
Hash connects to cannabis tradition in a way that no other concentrate does. It’s been made and consumed for millennia across cultures worldwide. Modern bubble hash, especially full-melt quality (also called 6-star), can be incredibly flavorful and potent. Lower-quality hash (3-4 star) is better suited for topping bowls or pressing into rosin. Hash is also the starting material for hash rosin — many of the best rosins in the market start as meticulously made bubble hash. If you appreciate cannabis craft and history, hash deserves your attention.
Diamonds & Sauce
What It Is
Diamonds and sauce is a two-component concentrate. The “diamonds” are crystalline THCA structures (the precursor to THC) that form during a slow purging process called “diamond mining.” The “sauce” is the terpene-rich liquid that surrounds them. Together, they deliver both extreme potency (from the near-pure THCA crystals) and exceptional flavor (from the concentrated terpene sauce).
Why It Matters
Diamonds and sauce is the best-of-both-worlds concentrate. The diamonds can test at 99%+ THCA, making them the most potent solid concentrate available. The sauce surrounding them is essentially concentrated terpene extract, delivering flavor you won’t find in any other format. A dab that combines both crystal and sauce gives you the full experience: massive potency with rich, complex flavor. It’s a premium product, but for special occasions or flavor-chasing sessions, nothing else compares.

Which Concentrate Is Right for You?
If you're prioritizing flavor above all else, go with live rosin or diamonds and sauce. These products preserve the most terpenes and deliver the most complex, strain-specific taste experiences.
If you want great flavor at a reasonable price, live resin is the sweet spot. It's most people's daily driver for a reason.
If you want easy handling and consistency, wax and budder are your friends. They scoop cleanly, dose predictably, and taste solid.
If you want maximum potency, distillate and diamonds deliver the highest THC concentrations available.
If you want to add something to your flower without extra equipment, crumble is the easiest concentrate to sprinkle on top of a bowl or roll into a joint.
If you appreciate tradition and craftsmanship, quality bubble hash connects you to thousands of years of cannabis concentrate history.
