Consumption Methods Compared
Every way to use cannabis, side by side. Onset, duration, potency, discretion, cost — everything you need to pick the right method for you.
Choosing How to Consume
The method you choose to consume cannabis shapes your entire experience — how quickly you feel effects, how long they last, how intense they are, and what kind of experience you have. Two people using the same strain at the same dose but through different methods will have meaningfully different experiences.
There is no single "best" method. The right choice depends on your goals, your lifestyle, your experience level, and practical considerations like discretion, respiratory health, and how much time you have. This guide compares every major consumption method so you can make an informed decision — or experiment with confidence.
For detailed information on any specific method, see our complete How to Use Cannabis guide. For a head-to-head on the two most popular methods, check out Smoking vs Edibles.

Understanding the Tradeoffs
Speed vs Duration
There is a fundamental tradeoff between how fast a method works and how long it lasts. Inhalation methods (smoking, vaping, dabbing) hit fast but fade relatively quickly. Oral methods (edibles, tinctures) take longer to kick in but last significantly longer. This tradeoff is driven by how cannabinoids enter your bloodstream — through the lungs (fast, direct) or through the digestive system (slow, metabolized into stronger compounds).
If you need immediate relief that you can control puff by puff, inhalation is your best bet. If you want effects that last through a long flight, a full workday, or an entire night of sleep, edibles or tinctures are the way to go. Some people combine methods — a vape hit for immediate onset, followed by an edible for sustained duration.
Potency vs Control
The most potent methods (concentrates, high-THC vape cartridges) tend to offer the least dose control. A single dab can deliver 25-50mg of THC in seconds. By contrast, a tincture dropper can deliver exactly 2.5mg. For people who need precision — managing anxiety, dialing in a sleep dose, or micro-dosing for creativity — methods with precise dose control are worth the tradeoff of slightly lower intensity.
Discretion vs Experience
Smoking a joint is the full sensory cannabis experience — the ritual of grinding, rolling or packing, lighting, the aroma, the flavor, the social aspect. But it is also the least discreet. Vape pens and edibles are nearly invisible to others but sacrifice some of the ritual and flavor depth. Your lifestyle and circumstances should guide this choice.
Respiratory Health
If respiratory health is a priority (and it should be for everyone, but especially anyone with asthma, COPD, or other lung conditions), edibles, tinctures, and topicals eliminate inhalation entirely. Dry herb vaping at low temperatures is less harmful than smoking but still involves inhaling something. The cleanest options from a respiratory standpoint are edibles and tinctures — no lungs involved at all.
Choose Your Method by Goal
Edibles
4-8+ hours of sustained effects. Ideal for sleep, long events, or all-day management.
Tinctures
Milligram-level accuracy with a measured dropper. Best for titrating to your perfect dose.
Concentrates
60-90%+ THC. For experienced users who know their tolerance and want efficiency.
Topicals
Zero psychoactive effects. Targeted to specific joints, muscles, or skin areas.
Low-dose Edible or Tincture
Start with 2.5mg THC. Precise, gentle, no inhalation. Full control over the experience.
First-Timer Recommendation
If you have never used cannabis before, here is our honest recommendation:
Start with a low-dose edible (2.5mg THC) or a tincture (start with the minimum dropper amount). Both give you precise control over your dose and do not require inhaling anything. Take it at home, on a day when you have nothing else to do, preferably with someone you trust who has cannabis experience.
If you prefer the immediate feedback of inhalation, a single small puff from a pre-roll or pipe is also a reasonable starting point — just take one puff, wait ten minutes, and see how you feel before doing anything else.
Avoid: concentrates, high-THC vape cartridges, or any edible over 5mg for your first experience. These can produce an unexpectedly intense experience that colors your perception of cannabis unfairly. You can always explore higher potency later once you know how your body responds to the basics.

A Note on Cost
Cost per session varies significantly by method. Flower is generally the most cost-effective option per milligram of THC. Edibles offer good value for long-lasting effects. Concentrates are expensive per unit but deliver more THC per dollar because of their potency. Tinctures tend to be higher priced but last a long time because each dose is small.
Vape cartridges offer convenience but are generally more expensive per milligram than flower. Dry herb vaporizers have a high upfront cost ($100-400 for a quality device) but pay for themselves over time through more efficient extraction — you use less flower per session compared to smoking.
The most important cost consideration is not price per product but price per satisfying experience. If a $50 tincture gives you 30 well-dosed sessions, that is less than $2 per session. If a $40 eighth of flower gives you 10 sessions, that is $4 per session. The "cheapest" product is not always the best value.
